What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  1. How long is my job going to take?
  2. Where did you learn how to do your trade?

Jaysen the owner of Ca Custom Tile Works has been installing tile and stone for more than half his life. He first started as an apprentice to an "old school" mason. Back in the old days, masons handled anything that fell into the mud trades such as cement, brick, block and tile. The man he learned from was taught by his father and his father was a mason as well. So needless to say he was very set in his ways and was always right. At a young age Jaysen learned the hard way not to question or challenge his mentor's ways. Picking up tile jobs here and there seemed a lot easier than building cinder block walls, building brick buildings and lugging all of the materials around. So needless to say Jaysen fell in love with tile and it made sense to him to make it his career. His mentor then realized how inspired Jaysen was with tile and took him under his wing teaching him all he knew. Jaysen progressed well from there and soaked up everything about tile, he brought blueprints home and studied them for the jobs he was on just to have an edge the next day at work. Jaysen was also admit about reading and learning everything he could on tile and eventually needed to move on to more tile only work which helped him launch his own business. Now 20 years later he is a success.

To answer how long is your job going to take?
We have enough experience to know how long something is going to take and I tell my customers... "trust me, your in good hands!"

If you were a customer, what do you wish you knew about your trade? Any inside secrets to share?
The tile trade is unforgiving. You can't mis-cut a tile, not be level or grout an installation wrong because its right there in plain daylight that the installer screwed up.
With the tile trade you have to be patient. The tile trade has taught Jaysen more patience than he ever thought he could have. His inside secret to his trade is to always think one step ahead! If you don't start right and stay on course, you'll never going to make it to your destination.

What do you wish customers knew about you or your profession?
Within one meeting with Jaysen and consulting with him on your project you will have a pretty good idea as to who he is-. a "professional!"

What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
There are 2 types of industry professionals.

  1. The sales man
  2. The professional

  1. Is out for his only interest and that is to make a sale, complete the job and hope it runs smoothly and doesn't have to go back.

  2. The professional is a salesman with pride and confidence in every step he takes. He doesn't have fancy catch phrases or smoke and mirrors. The professional cares about how " your " job turns out because he knows it's reflection of his own work. The professional knows that the only time he's going back to your place is to do more work because he took care of your needs. There is no reason not to treat a $500 job just as good as a $10,000 job. Jaysen's advice is to go with the professional with pride!

How did you decide to get in your line of work?
This line of work makes sense to Jaysen, he enjoys improving peoples spaces with his love and care!

Describe the most common types of jobs you do for your clients?
No job is common. There are a lot of parameters in every single job.
Customer, materials, timeline, and location can dictate how a job is going to go, and that is another reason Jaysen loves what he does. It gives him an opportunity to shine. Jaysen is a problem solver and make tile look easy!

Tell us about a recent job you did that you are particularly proud of?
Ca Custom Tile Works donated time to an orphanage in Tecate, Mexico. They worked on showers within the new facility. Jaysen wanted to help a close friend of his who was involved in a church project in Tecate because it just felt like the right thing to do for people that couldn't do the work for themselves. Just how he is!

Do you do any sort of continuing education to stay up on the latest developments in your field?
Of course. Its in Jaysen's DNA to have tricks up his sleeve!

What are the latest developments in your field? Are there any exciting things coming in the next few years or decade that will change your line of business?
Tile is tile, and as long as Ca Custom Tile Works is in business, we will always do our best to make it more than just tile!

What questions should a consumer ask to hire the right service professional?
You should always do your homework before you tackle a project outside your comfort level. Once you feel comfortable in what you have learned and how you want your project to be completed, stick to your guns. Ask how every little detail is to be done, ask them their methods of completing the project. And last but not least, ask them if this is how they would do it in their home! Don't let another contractor try to cut corners.

What is your greatest strength?
Jaysen's greatest strength would have to be his optimism! He believes negativity is an excuse for not fulfilling your obligation to leave this place better than we found it.
